Our story
Why a cooperative?
Reliable, affordable internet shouldn't be a luxury — especially in rural communities that big telecom companies have long underserved. Keweenaw Broadband Cooperative was formed because the people of the Keweenaw Peninsula deserve a provider that's accountable to them, not to a distant boardroom.
As a cooperative, every customer is a member with a voice in how we operate. Decisions about pricing, service areas, and network investment are made locally — by people who live and work here, who understand what this community needs.

Local ownership
Keweenaw Broadband is owned by its members — the people and businesses we serve. Every decision is made here, with the community's interests at the center.
Not-for-profit
We don't answer to shareholders. Revenue goes back into maintaining and expanding the network, keeping rates fair, and serving the community.
Member governance
As a cooperative, members have a real say in how we operate. We hold open meetings, publish our financials, and welcome participation from the community.
Universal access
We're committed to reaching every corner of Houghton and Keweenaw Counties — including the rural and remote areas that commercial providers have left behind.
Network transition
Assuming operation of the ShoreWaves network
Keweenaw Broadband Cooperative is assuming operation of the ShoreWaves network, which has served Houghton and Keweenaw Counties for years. This transition brings the network under local, community cooperative ownership — ensuring it continues to serve residents and businesses for the long term.
